Why a school's distinct identity matters more than ever — to parents and to learners

On teaching, identity, and surviving the long run.

There are countless reasons a family starts looking for a new school: good teachers, a safe environment, a name that might open doors later — you could talk about it all day. And nearly every school makes the same promises.

So let me suggest a small experiment I think about often. Walk into ten schools, spend an hour in each, then come back and describe every one of them to someone without naming it. You might find that only two or three feel like schools with a real identity — a clear stance, their own way of building learning. The rest slowly blur into one.

That doesn't mean those schools are bad. Many may be very good — and that, precisely, is the problem.

We tend to call schools that all look alike the "safest choice." I believe the opposite. A school with no distinct self may have nothing left to compete on but what anyone can offer — a lower fee, a newer building, a higher average test score from last year. And all of those can be overtaken, without much effort, by the next school down the road with deeper pockets.

A school with real identity, on the other hand, was never playing that game to begin with — because its true self is something a competitor cannot buy or copy with a single budget cycle.

So when people ask me which kind of school is the riskier bet, my honest answer is — the one that looks safest.

01

First, what does "identity" actually mean?

Let me define it clearly, because the word gets thrown around far too loosely. Identity is not a logo, not a slogan, and not a freshly repainted courtyard. Those things can make a school look better — but they're exactly what a well-funded rival can imitate.

Real identity sits far deeper. It's a way of thinking about learning that seeps into every part of the school — the buildings, the timetable, how teachers work, and who a child becomes as they walk out the gate at eighteen. In the schools I admire most, the way they teach is part of the brand. You can barely separate the two.

This is why mere image depreciates year after year, while identity compounds and grows stronger. A gym can age. But a coherent teaching approach, patiently built and cultivated, only sinks deeper into the culture. At some point, a parent can describe the school to a friend in a single sentence — and that one sentence may be worth more than several billboards combined.

02

What keeps an identity alive for the long run — three things that reinforce each other

A long-lived school identity usually holds three mutually reinforcing things inside it. Pull one out, and the strength of the whole starts to wobble.

One — you stop competing on price alone

When what makes you stand out is the particular kind of learner you cultivate, fees and rankings are no longer the only arena. You're not merely the cheaper or newer option. For families seeking something specific, you may become the only choice that truly fits — and that is a far stronger position.

Two — when people feel they belong, they want to pass it on

An identity that can be described is an identity that can be shared. A line like "the school where kids learn by actually building real things" can travel from one parent to another. "The school's pretty good" rarely goes far. Belonging turns today's families into the people who tell the school's story tomorrow, and keeps alumni attached for years. It's one of the most credible forms of word-of-mouth a school can build. A competitor can copy your building in one budget cycle — but not a teaching method cultivated, steadily, over time.

Three — the alignment between what a school says and what it does

This is the one I care about most. Schools with identity tell the same story through everything — how they teach, the spaces they learn in, how the school day is shaped, and the work students carry out into the world. When everything speaks with one voice, the identity becomes memorable, hard to forget, and hard to copy. But when things don't line up — a slogan about progressive learning that dissolves into a timetable still built on memorising for exams — people feel the contradiction. And the identity quietly weakens.

03

Four schools that show it's really possible

The four schools below aren't trying to win on buildings or fees. Each competes through a distinctive way of cultivating learners — enough that many families choose them for it. I use these four because they're not just theory on paper.

Learning by building the real thing

High Tech High

San Diego, USA

Here, students don't just sit exams to prove what they've learned — they build real work and exhibit it publicly. Every teacher opts into project-based learning, working in small "pods" to design cross-subject projects.

The detail I love most — which answers the "what kind of child suits this?" question head-on — is that admission runs by a zip-code lottery, mixing family backgrounds, yet nearly every student still moves on to university. Identity wasn't added afterwards to explain the results. It's what produced them in the first place.

The whole world is the classroom

THINK Global School

A travelling school, no permanent campus

The world's first travelling high school has no building to compete with — and that absence is central to its identity. Students live and learn in four countries a year. There are no conventional periods; each term rotates across disciplines tied to the place they're actually living in. Place becomes part of the curriculum. It's a sharp example of experience-design and teaching built on the same idea — then followed all the way through.

Real tools, real problems

Brightworks

San Francisco, USA

Brightworks sits inside a former mayonnaise factory, turning a raw industrial space into part of the learning experience. Children work with real tools, real materials, and real problems — so the space, the philosophy, and what happens each day all speak the same language.

The result is a school that clearly draws one kind of family — those who want their child to grow into someone self-directed, who sees a hard problem as something to understand and solve rather than avoid. That's a promise parents can easily explain to others, and want to pass along.

Learning through speaking and doing

School 21

London, UK

School 21 is the one that matters most to this piece. It's a state school — publicly funded, under the national curriculum, and made to sit the same high-stakes exams as everyone around it. Yet within those constraints it built an even sharper identity, by weaving three things into everything it teaches: wellbeing, oracy (the art of communicating through speech), and project-based learning. It proves that what Thai schools face can, in fact, be made better.

04

But what about the mandated curriculum — how can identity survive?

Here's the objection I hear immediately, especially in Thailand: we don't have that kind of freedom. Our children must follow the OBEC core curriculum, collect mandatory subjects and minimum credits, so a path into university through TCAS stays open. A Thai school can't design learning around its own ideals alone. So doesn't identity become a luxury for schools with more freedom?

I don't think so. And this reframing is the heart of it all: the OBEC core curriculum is a floor, not a ceiling. It sets the minimum children must study and pass — but it doesn't tell you, in detail, to teach everything one way, or how a school should design the learning experience. And that's exactly what schools still get to design.

"How do we teach what the curriculum requires, through a method that is distinctly ours — and what more can we build on top of that?"

From what I've seen, schools tend to choose from a spread of approaches, from small tweaks to structural change.

Wrap it in an elective

Keep the core subjects as they are, but reserve one slot each week — a studio or project period — that belongs to the school alone. Low risk, moderate reward, and a good way to start experimenting before going further.

Design it into the breaks

Build an intensive experience that reflects the school's identity when exam pressure eases. It tells a clear story well — but if the identity only appears during breaks, everyone senses it's a supplement, not the school's heart.

Run a dual diplomaเปิดสองหลักสูตรควบ (Dual Diploma)

Let the OBEC curriculum be one track, and place a program reflecting the school's identity on another. It's clean in terms of compliance — but beware: if the "real track" is still seen as the exam track while the identity program is merely an option, families feel that hierarchy instantly. It works only when it becomes a credential with a genuine path forward, not a split between a "serious side" and a "fun side."

Change how learning is shownเปลี่ยนวิธีแสดงว่าเด็กเรียนรู้แล้ว

Keep the required content, but change how learning is evidenced — from relying on test scores alone to public exhibitions and portfolios of real work. In Thailand this can run alongside the OBEC curriculum, and becomes an advantage for the TCAS Portfolio round. So identity stops being a risk — and turns into an edge.

Weave it into the core

This is the hardest move, and the most durable. Still teach the required standards and content — but teach them your way. Map each OBEC indicator onto a project rubric, so everything children must learn is still fully assessed, only measured through real work. No parallel curriculum. No separate add-on program. Identity and requirement become one and the same.

And if a school stays inside the existing system — can it really be done?

This is why I return to School 21. It works under constraints not so different from what Thai schools face. As a state school, it must teach England's national curriculum and put students through GCSE exams like everyone else. But instead of parking its identity in extracurriculars or summer projects, it chose to build oracy, wellbeing, and project-based learning directly into the curriculum students must study and be examined on.

More importantly, the school backs this identity with real resources, not just words. Its flagship real-work program holds the status of a "ninth GCSE," with class time and budget on par with core subjects, while older students spend half a day a week on real projects with real local employers.

And the results answer parents' real worry directly. The school was rated Outstanding across the board by Ofsted, won a national Character Award, and still posts stronger results in core subjects than many schools around it. A clear identity and the outcomes families want, then, need not be traded against each other. When a school teaches the required content through its own method, instead of placing identity off to the side, the two can become one.

For Thai schools, adapting this is more straightforward than it sounds. See the OBEC core curriculum as the floor it truly is. Teach those things through a method that is distinctly yours. Give the program that reflects your identity the same weight as a real subject — perhaps even your own "ninth subject" — not an afterthought. And design that identity to connect with university paths that value diverse work and ability, like the Portfolio round, while core subjects keep other options open. Seen this way, identity doesn't narrow a child's future. It may even widen the paths they can choose.

05

What I want to say to school leaders

A school with lasting identity needn't have the newest building or the loudest advertising. It needs something clear enough that others can't copy it: a way of cultivating learners that is genuinely its own, something families can describe as what makes this school different, and something that — as time passes — sinks ever deeper into the culture. Identity isn't the colour painted on the building. It's what defines the meaning of everything that happens inside it.

So if you're weighing a path that looks "safe" against one that's clearer and more distinct, let me flip the question slightly. A school stuck in the middle, with nothing memorable left — is that really what you want? On the day a rival opens on the same street with lower fees, a newer campus, or a bigger budget, what will you have left that keeps parents choosing you?

Build something others can't copy. Because in the long run, you'll barely need to advertise to win.
